Xiaoyu Liu - Course Reflection

I enjoy taking this course a lot as one of my professional elective class. The reason why I picked this course at the beginning was simply that of the course title - Intelligent building. I didn't know that much about intelligent building and was really curious about what this elective course could bring to me by the end. Unsurprisingly, I was able to learn a lot of things out of this course. Starting from writing a weekly blog post that keeps me posted with not only my own reflection of the course material but also my classmates' reflections. Also the class projects such as the Revit model creation which I found it very helpful with remembering some of the tools, Sensors project which I found it relatively difficult but it was a good introduction project to learn how sensors work with MS Access, and the term project, which I found it the most interesting and learned the most out of all project because I really liked my topic and it was really fun to do a research topic on something that interests me. I was having a little trouble of defining the topic that I want to research on but gladly everything got sorted out and I was glad to find a meaningful topic that related to the intelligent building. Needless to say, this course is a very well-organized and well-planned course with providing students as much as it can for learning topics such as BIM tools, databases, sensors, networks, AI, and robotics. The technologies that are mentioned in this course are actually becoming more and more common nowadays as we all know. Google releases its clips camera just a few days ago with a built-in AI feature that automatically captures your face or your family's face; Alibaba's new "smile to pay" systems that allow customs making payment with just smiling in front of a camera; Robotics have been started using in the construction filed already for some time... and there are more and more applications of the technologies that we have studied in this course that we haven't heard about. It is important to know these technologies and hopefully I can help with applying them in the real world after graduation.

Hi Marino! I completely agree with you that this course is one of the most interesting courses that I have ever taken at Drexel for sure! I didn't take an information system class like you did so I almost have none knowledge about databases and sensors before taking this course. However, I did find this class very helpful as an introduction course of some topics. And I definitely agree with you that Professor Mitchell did a great job on giving feedback to students as well as making sure the comments are as clear as possible!

Hi Carlos! I agree with you that the guest speakers are really helpful for this course and I just realized that I forgot to mention it in my own reflection! It is important to hear people from the field talking about the topics we learned such as BIM, AI, and sensors. And I also enjoyed the class videos as they were interesting and are all related to one topic per each lecture. And I agree with you that the participation of the class doesn't seem to be weighted a lot and I would also suggest having more discussions in class with engagement from every student.

Hi Brad! I agree with you that this topic did cover a lot of topics but somehow they are taught together and tied together very nicely. And I also appreciate the term project very much as you do. I think it is a great exercise since it allows students choosing their own topics based on their interests and that's what makes the research process so fun and valuable. And I'm glad that you found this class helpful and found it useful for your future career!
