Gibson - B4

I decided to work alone on this project, and choose to research 'intelligent" versus "green" buildings. I will focus on what makes each type of building its own and describe each of its unique charaterictiscs that attracts consumers to build these type of projects. One major aspect, I have discovered so far is the way to optimize but also hvae the most energy efiicent building to be the most diffcult challegene for both buildings types.

A further look into, a intelligent vs. a green builing break down of a power grid is depicted in the figure below. A key component to conserveing the energy in these type of proejcts comes down to the swtich agents and how quicly the buildings systems interacts with the surrpoding as well as interior envirnonments.

I appreciate you honestly, in your post becuase during my own research I have come across serval varying definition for 'intelligent' and 'green' buildings. So it is good to know that I am not the only class member going through the same issue.

Response 2: Chris Thach
Great post! I really enjoyed reading your post about the new Smart Houses that are beginning to turn into a new must have at top ausment parks like Diseny World. The study of intelligent applicances I belive is the nect step to having completey efficent inteillgent buildngs.

Response 3: Bach Tran Nam
I found your post about the tallest structures in the world to catch my eye in the fact that they tpo are implenting this new type of technology in their buildings as well.

Blog 4 -Intelligent Building vs. Green Building- Jianfeng Xiao

I am working with Mariano Amisial on this project. The title is Green Building Vs Intelligent Building. We will explore the similarity and difference between green and intelligent building. We choose this topic, because we are interested in the development and application of these two buildings. Through doing this project, we want to clearly distinguish these two types of building and we will focus on their impacts on environment in multiple areas and how intelligent building technologies can be used to develop the green building.
We will start by explaining the definition and concept of both building. Although intelligent technologies can often be used in developing a green building, they are not very similar. From our research, green building is considered as ecological and sustainable building. It requires to consider the water use, electric use and indoor environment quality in plan, design, construction and operation processes. Intelligent building is to use technologies and building process to reduce the environment impacts, to increase employee productivity and to convenient the building’s owner. Then, we will discuss the advantage and disadvantage of these two buildings. Through our research, we found some buildings that are both intelligent and green. We will use two recently built buildings as example for illustration. There are many intelligent technologies such as LEED and building information system are used in the intelligent building. These technologies can also be used in green building. We will analyze the advantage and disadvantage of applying these technologies on the green building. In addition, we will discuss both building’s impact on the environment. As we all know, green building is built in green standard, which has less impact on the environment. Therefore, we will try to find out what impacts might have during the construction process. For intelligent building, it might have higher impacts on the environment because of the technologies used. Intelligent building can be very smart and luxury that do not use ecofriendly materials for construction. These are problems we will analyze in the research.
The most challenge of this project is to find appropriate evident to support our thesis. There are many areas can be explored in this topic. We should avoid too vague or too broad exploration. It is important for us to focus on one or two areas to have a deep analysis.

Sarah,
Your ideas of the advancement of BIM in workflow is very interesting. With the development of BIM, the computer or system technologies will perform important roles in a project. I think you can focus on how develop in BIM will affect the workflow currently and in the future. In addition, their application in engineering and architecture areas can be analyzed.
Luciana Tangari Comments:
Luciana,
Your project seems very interesting. I am also doing the comparison between green and intelligent building on my project. I will focus on how intelligent technologies can develop the green building. I agree with you that the distinguish of the concept is very important because these two buildings look similar. If concept is not clear, it will hard to find appropriate evident to support the thesis.
Cody Johnson Comments:
Cody,
Your project of 3D scanning seems very interesting. I agree that the develop of 3D scanning can create the model that help constructor and designer to better measure the site. It is like Revit and AutoCAD. Your can have a better understand of site through the 3D model compare to the 2D drawing. But one concern I have is that the cost of 3D scanning might be higher. Contractors might not want to spend extra money.

Term Paper: Green versus Intelligent Building Technology
For the term project, Andrew and I are writing a paper about the difference between green buildings and intelligent buildings. We’re planning to look at the two through the scope of technology used to design the buildings and the technology implemented in the buildings. We also will look at how the technology used in both aspects affect the life cycle of the building and improve it. Our general definition for a green building is: a building that takes human health and environmental impact into consideration while an intelligent building is: building that utilizes systems that allow for automatic and centralized control of a buildings energy system (HVAC, lights, etc.). With research we plan to make our definitions more concrete. One goal for the project is to learn more about the current technology used in both types of buildings. Some examples of this are: solar panels, LEED considerations, energy analysis, high efficiency mechanical systems, lighting, and building automation systems.
This topic is interesting to me because I’m minoring in Sustainability in the Built Environment. The SBE minor focuses specifically on analyzing future design challenges from a sustainability perspective. In classes we’ve discussed integrated design processes, the LEED program, and other aspects of green buildings. The courses have made me think about how a building is designed to be “green” and focuses on the total building life cycle. The classes haven’t specifically discussed intelligent buildings and the technology associated with them. Thus, I haven’t had much exposure to intelligent buildings. This paper will allow me to gain a better understanding of the overlap and differences of features in the two.
Some challenges we might run into is whether our scope is too broad. As we continue to research the topics we may find that looking at both the design and implemented technology might be too much. If that’s the case, we’ll re-evaluate the paper and decide which path will be best for comparing and contrasting. One consideration to be made is that technology is constantly changing and current usage can become out of date quickly. This can affect the life cycle of the building.

Sarah Hollis:
Your paper sounds interesting! I’m interested in seeing what people in the industry say about BIM and what a “good workflow” is. I know in my experience I’ve seen how quickly tasks can be done because of Revit and AutoCAD. I worked for the city and saw the hand drawn plans and how tedious the process was. Now we have BIM and changes can be made with just a few clicks.

Cody Johnson:
I honestly had never thought about the possibilities of a 3D scanner in both design and construction fields. Using them to map existing conditions would be incredibly helpful, especially if the structural or mechanical systems are very complicated. I saw Lucy commented about how helpful this technology would be for pharma labs. From working on HVAC systems for labs, I know the existing conditions can be complicated and difficult to show precisely on plans.  This technology would be incredibly useful in those scenarios.

Dung Tran:
Your project is super cool. I love that you’re taking this as an opportunity to expand your knowledge of BIM and the different systems that go into a building. I know next to nothing about creating structural systems in Revit so doing something like this would be beneficial for me too. I wonder if you could do a structural analysis of the building in Revit as well, just to learn another aspect of the software.

B4 - Intelligent vs. Green - Maita

For our project, Dee Dee and I are researching and comparing intelligent and green buildings. Intelligent and green buildings are both improvements on a normal building type but through different augmentations. Intelligent buildings are more catered towards improving the way the building can function through technological automation. Green buildings improve the building by helping reduce the harmful emissions and by-products produced by the building. Throughout many of the Architectural Engineering classes at Drexel, these subjects have been covered in various levels of detail. The main focus of this project will be to determine what exactly the two types of buildings are and research and explain the differences they have in design and implemented technology.

The paper will focus on the differences and compare the two but will also go in-depth on the different components of the systems. The subjects of intelligent and green buildings can be very broad topics. We decided rather than trying to do a general overview of both systems as a whole, we would focus on the specific design and implemented technology differences that go into each type of building and explain those. Although we know a decent amount of information on what goes into these systems, we are still doing extensive research to try and find all the information we can.

This project was chosen because we both had an interest in the topic of intelligent vs. green buildings. At first glance, many people may think that the two terms are interchangeable and at first, I shared that opinion. But through research, I found that there are a lot of clear differences that separate the two. Determining what exactly these differences are and comparing the two buildings types to see if they overlap at all is the goal of this project.

I think a challenge for this project will be staying on topic when writing the paper. As I stated before, the topics of intelligent and green buildings are broad. Although we have a plan on what we will be focusing on, I think situations are going to come up where we will have to explain topics that are not directly related to what we are talking about, but are relevant enough to include.

Dung T: I think that the topic of your project is an interesting one. Using a term-long project like this will be a really great way to help familiarize yourself better with BIM. You may want to think about adding more to your project since Revit has a lot of capabilities.

Carlos H: I like the idea of researching technology based on where it is available geographically, rather than as the field as a whole. I think it'll give you a really good understanding of how large of a technological gap there are between some parts of the world.

Mark and Zac: Combining this term project with your AE 391 project was a great idea since you guys won't have to worry about designing and making a whole new building and can do more advanced analysis on it.

B4- Green Building vs Intelligent Building- Amisial

B4- Green Building vs Intelligent Building
My final project will be to write about these two concepts as the title indicates; the objective is to hopefully provide a clear distinction between the two, and to further assist by elaborating on the basic knowledge regarding the subject. This will be done by discussing the concepts and general theories developed on the subject, providing the main characteristics and definitions of both intelligent and green building, method of construction, materials, advantages and disadvantages, impacts on the environment, common interests and connections between the two.
As mentioned above, this is primarily about intelligent building, and it will discuss how intelligent building technologies can develop green building. Additionally, some of the common knowledge that has been already found about intelligent building are: they have higher level of security, easy to monitor, and include information integrated systems, but they were also proven to be of higher cost due to installation systems, and system complexion. Some of the challenges that we might encounter are: issues in finding case study for the two concepts (green & intelligent buildings) to illustrate the arguments presented and concrete data to elaborate on the comparison between the two.

Tyler,
Your writing on how intelligent building technologies can be used to make a building more green will be very interesting; This is one aspect of intelligent building that I have not given a lot of thoughts, but the summary of your paper highlights everything that I needed to get a clear picture on this relationship between intelligent and green buildings. I agree to the fact that both buildings have closely similar goals but they use different methods, and I would have appreciated to know which one is more efficient in some specific goal as example impact on the environment.

 Thach,
I found your project subject very inspiring, and implementing intelligent appliances into intelligent building is a must in order to get the network system of the building more efficient. I completely agree with the fact that switching these appliances in an old hose is one of the first step into intelligent building, but I wonder what would be the outcome if such appliances are installed in a green house.

Bach,
Your project subject: underground intelligent building is very interesting; you have addressed some of the most important concerns that we have nowadays about tall buildings. You have mentioned that about 27% of the top ten tallest building are vanity height; I was hoping that this fact was elaborated a little more, and I agree that building underground seems safer, but I question if the environment impact will be less on the surrounding.

B4- Intelligent vs Green -Tangari

My term project will explore the two building types, “green” and “intelligent”. These two types are constantly being used interchangeably in the architecture and engineering design world. But these two categories can yield very different building types. My hope with this research paper is to create a clear distinction between the two and learn how they both aid to the operation and functions of a building. Without much prior knowledge my understanding is that an intelligent building focuses more on creating an environment that is comfortable and equipped with technologies that simplify redundant tasks as well as improving operation of facilities by providing feedback on systems. A green building’s main focus is to be able to be able to minimize or eliminate any harmful effects onto the environment while paying attention to human wellness as well.

Within the paper the main focuses and goals of each will be outlined and determined. With this it will become clear how the two are commonly mislabeled and how or if one type can be another. I also plan to see which hold better benefits or if one is a better option than the other. The knowledge obtained from determining the differences between the two would be beneficial for future endeavors; to have a clear understanding could help in modeling buildings to the right standards, as there is much confusion over the distinction currently.

Through conducting my research I hope to focus on a specific topic as this is very broad. Right now through my current research I have just been developing a broad base of understanding the two. I  plan as I delve further into this topic more to be able to narrow in on a particular concept addressed by both in order to be able to see clear advantages and disadvantages of each. Being this is such a broad topic I can see this being the difficult part of the assignment, but I feel overall will be a pleasant experience because of my interest in how buildings are operated and managed.

Carlos Hillinger
Carlos, I like how you are taking your topic and focusing it on other countries. technologies here are so advanced and able to accomplish so much that it is not a common thought or even a clear understanding of how other countries are developing their infrastructures. I like how you are going to research the background on the area as to understand the dynamics and limitation that may be imposed on building structures, economically and politically and even availability of resources.

Malik Anibaba
Malik, I see we have chosen almost the same topic to research. I like how you plan to determine if there is a scale for how intelligent a building can be as there is one for the level of "green" a building is.You had mentioned narrowing your focus and I think possibly looking at the energy uses of each may be a start to making the topic a bit more direct, which is where I plan on starting being it is such a broad topic.

Cody Johnson
Cody, I really like how your topic is aimed at finding a way to improve the construction industry. It is very true what you said about 3D models, which are generally seen by the client and the designer and never passed on further. 3D scanning would be very helpful for even site walk-throughs and even in places such as pharmaceutical labs. Many times once a lab is sealed workers/designers are unable to get back in and have to rely on the fact that construction was done according to the plans exactly as well as rely on pictures which are not always accurate. 3D scanning would be great in this case to be able to have accurate plan of what is in the space, which was a daily problem I saw at my first coop.

Term Project: Lovett

For my term project, I would like to look at "green" standards and how intelligent building components may make them a more viable practice.  This will encourage the use of green technologies for the environment as well as bring the efficiency and comfortably of intelligent building systems into the fold.  A subsequent topic to be examined is how to incorporate these two typically expensive alternatives using a monetarily feasible method.
