Experience with Intelligent Buildings
I am a Junior pursuing a BSAE/MSCE with a structures concentration.
My experience with the topics in this course are mainly focused around Revit. I have worked in Revit during both of my co-ops and have seen it utilized to varying degrees of its capacity. I have mainly worked on Revit's structural side and used Revit to collaborate on a single file with my coworkers, as well as coordinate with other trades.
I do not have much experience with databases beyond Excel work.
Expectations of the Course
In this course, I anticipate reading and exploring various technologies associated with building construction and functionality. After the introduction, I expect that we will read and discuss software and specific technologies that are being adopted for construction purposes, as well as software systems being integrated into building controls to increase energy efficiency.
Blurps from Evernotes
The articles that I read in Evernotes relate to new technology that I have recently acquired: a fitbit and a VR headset.
The first article correlated the personal use of a fitbit to the level of personalization that should be integrated to building monitoring systems. The bottom line was that increased efficiency can be achieved if occupants are made aware of building energy uses in the same way that people are increasingly wanting to be aware of their step count.
The last articles I read pertained to VR that is being developed to operate machinery. This is very interesting to me. The article showed a man using VR in Spain and operating a piece of heavy machinery that was in Switzerland. Having just recently used VR for the first time, I think this is super neat and seems like something that can be developed to be very useful. Whether it is necessary or not, I am not convinced.
Definition of Intelligent Buildings
I would define an intelligent building as one that includes technology for the use of construction, self-monitoring, or operation of the building.

Zachery Arnold's Introduction
Background:
I am a junior Civil and Architectural Engineering
student with a minor in Construction Management. I have worked in the civil
construction field for a few years now and am interested in learning more about
buildings. What peaked my interest in this course was primarily the BIM portion
of the course and how that is very quickly becoming a huge portion of the
preconstruction, and construction of a building.
Expectation:
I expect to have a better understanding of the
new technologies that are impacting the field of construction primarily with
robotics and BIM. As a society we are always trying to find better, faster, and
hopefully cheaper ways to construct a building. This all starts with the design
and works its way through the entire process of designing and constructing the
building to finally the operation of the building. New technologies are
constantly being developed for all phases of this process.

The most interesting Evernote post I
found discussed the attempts that companies have been trying to automate
code-checking. The idea is that you should be able to insert a BIM model to
this software and it will ensure that all codes are met. There are many
software issues and the constant need to update and create a code database for
this system to work.
Definition:
Intelligent Buildings can be defined
as the use of technology in the design, construction, and operation of a
building to produce a higher quality product on schedule.

About Me
I'm a senior in the CIVE/AE program, with a concentration in Digital Building.
Experience with Intelligent Buildings
As I understand intelligent buildings, I don't have much experience with them. I have minimal Revit experience (only what I've done for Drexel courses so far), and moderate experience with databases (both Excel and SQL), which I know will be relevant later in the course. However, I do have some experience with aspects of the course outside the context of intelligent buildings. For example, I have taken multiple courses in robotics, both in building and programming. I have also done some research on AI, since it's a topic I'm interested in, but I don't have any practical experience with it.
Expectations for the Course
I don't exactly know what to expect from this course. I expect that I will be doing a lot of reading about new technologies that are being incorporated into buildings, thereby making them "intelligent," and I know that some of these include robotics, AI, databases, and more.

I found an article by Jared Leidich, entitled "Is the Singularity Steering us Toward the Greatest Inequality in History?", which discusses the concept of a technological singularity and how the exponential growth of technological advancements contributes to growing inequality between the privileged and underprivileged, particularly when it comes to access to technology and the internet. I particularly like that the article acknowledged that technological advancements further contribute to the societal phenomenon where, as they say, "the rich get richer and the poor get poorer." This phrase is often used in reference to wealth, but it also applies here. Those with access to technology are more easily able to develop newer technology, while those who live in developing countries, for example, or live below the poverty line have delayed access to advancements. This means that while advantaged populations are already at work developing the next step, disadvantaged populations are still three steps behind.

I would define an intelligent building as one that has technology allowing it to be receptive of human interaction and having the ability to adapt automatically to use.

Kerry Milligan's Introduction
Hi everyone! My name is Kerry Milligan, and I am a senior BS/MS student in Architectural Engineering. My BS concentration is in Digital Building, which is why I am taking this class. Additionally, my MS concentration is in Building Energy, which I think makes this class a great fit for my studies here at Drexel. After taking the database class required for DB students, I feel pretty comfortable with databases and database systems, but unfortunately do not have too much experience with building modeling software, such as Revit.
From this class, I do hope to grow some of my experience with Revit, but most importantly learn about the wide varieties of technologies that can be used in our field, and how they are relevant to what we will be doing in our careers. In particular, I hope to understand how technologies can help design and build smarter, more energy efficient buildings.

This article talks about how Intel is using sensors and technologies to expand beyond the boundaries of a building and bringing it to the scale of a city.
My initial definition for an Intelligent Building is one that is active, as opposed to passive, and does more than just "exist."
