Project Topic: Integration of Sensors in BIM
Research Overview
For my project I chose how sensors could be integrated into BIM technology and application. Although we have yet to discuss in class how sensors can be a part of BIM technology I was interested to research how it could be used for our use and for a variety of projects. Since new features are being applied to this BIM software I wanted to see how sensors could be as well. Examples of sensors that could be used for structural health monitoring, personnel, sustainability factors, and temperature.
The plan for this project was first understand which sensors are right to use computer modeling and then see the method of application based on the software program. Hopefully the type of sensors used can be integrated into one computer software. From this I wanted to concentrate my research on how sensors affect this specific computer program and how it can be applied in the field.
With this although it would be interesting to research the different methods and how engineering firms use sensors in BIM I wanted to create a a real building model in revit or some software where sensors can placed in the design. This may be ambitious but with the help of my mechanical friends I was going to see if using an accelerometer the data could be presented somehow in the BIM model.
Responses:
Chris, I like that your going into the actual definition of "intelligent vs. green" I think its important to distinct this different and I hope to maybe integrate sustainable vs. intelligent sensors into my project as well.
Bach, I really enjoy the base of your project with marino. It would be fascinating to see how this technology can affect engineering practices not only in the US but also in developing countries. I think if someone like us were to go there to teach coming up engineering firms it would honestly ease their process of building.
Deutch, I'm very interested in you and Sarina's project looking into the actual material portion of the BIM modeling. It is often hard to combine structural modeling with sustainability and I'm interested in what you find that looks for better alternatives in structural design.
